Childhood memories
Simone Klibingat

She was four years old when her parents had died in this car crash. She was so young that she wasn't able to realise what had happened. She had no other relatives except her grandfather. At this time he was 47 years old and had lost his wife, who had died because of cancer, just two years before. After this accident Katharina and he were the only people of their family who were still alive. They had to stick together, so Franz Wegertz adopted little Katharina. It wasn't easy for both of them. They had to face a lot of problems other families hadn't. There was no other woman in the family, but Franz did a good job. Suddenly, Katharina smiled. She remembered the day the had her first period. She was thirteen and very shocked. She ran to her grandfather crying and screaming that she was bleeding. When Franz discovered that the girl had no wound he turned and walked out of the house. Katharina was still standing in the living room and cried. After half an hour he was back with a book about the puberty and some sanitary pads. They read the book together and Franz answered every question Katharina had. "That was the way, he solved a problem: reading a book about it and discussed it with me." Katharina smiled. And now he was dead. She shook her head. It still seemed so unreal to her.
