The auction called off
Simone Klibingat

Volker entered the room dressed in his best suit. He finally was there, at the auction. He was joining the event all the people whose conversation he had overheard had been talking about. Maybe he was going to meet a former customer from the Italian restaurant. That wouldn't be so good. He had to think about a story that he could tell him. Why he is here and not in Bonn.

He was just thinking about it when somebody opened the door and slammed it into his back. He turned around and looked into the face of Katharina Wegertz. The situation he was afraid of was going to happen.

"Good evening Miss", he said. Katharina looked at him, but him it seemed as if she didn't recognise him. "Ha!", he thought, "I'm so good at playing the Italian waiter that nobody recognised me, when I don't." Then he noticed that Katharina didn't look that good or awake, but very confused. "Sorry, Sir. Good evening." she stammered and walked on. Volker walked to the other side of the room.

Suddenly, a man Sean came in. He walked straight to the middle of the room.

"Ladies and Gentleman who are here for the auction, may I have your attention please. I'm afraid I must tell you that because of a letter [link to the letter from the widow] I received today the auction must be cancelled till Friday."

All of a sudden, everybody started to talk. The noise was getting louder and louder.

Volker turned around. A middle-aged man and an elderly woman were having a quarrel.

"I'm the real heir of Brian O'Donnell. I'm his wife!"

" His ex-wife! I'm his son! I'm his real heir!"

" It's not sure that you are his son!"

" I am his son! My mother told me!"

"Your mother told you! Have you got any certified document that certifies that he was your father?"

Volker couldn't stand the crowded room with all the noisy people in it any longer. He didn't understand anything.

He left the Achill Cliff House and went back to the hostel where he stayed.
